WHAT IS PLEIN AIR?
Plein air (French for “outdoors") painting was popularized in the late 1800s by the Impressionists.
Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissaro (among others) championed plein air painting, which relied on the direct observation of the changing light and its effects on the landscape.
American artists who studied in Paris brought the technique back to the US, with Cape Ann becoming a focal point for plein air painters due to its bustling art community, unique coastline and distinctive light.
Launched in 2016, Cape Ann Plein Air Gala and Art Sale has become a nationally acclaimed event by focusing on Cape Ann’s unique place as the birthplace of American plein air.
